Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino wants former Manchester City players Cole Palmer and Raheem Sterling to celebrate when they score against their former club.
Chelsea are expected to face Manchester City in the Premier League on February 17, 2024, at Etihad Stadium, with Manchester City eyeing a win against the London side.
In the previous match between the two teams on November 12, 2023, Raheem Sterling and Palmer scored in a 4-4 draw against Manchester City, but somehow their celebration was muted.
But ahead of their meeting later today, February 17, Pochettino said in a press conference, "If they celebrate, it's football. If they don't celebrate and want to show respect, OK, but I think when you score a goal, you need to celebrate."
"You kill your former club, and after you say, "Sorry, when you play for different shirts, badges, and clubs, you cannot stop your feelings."
"When you score, it's the most beautiful feeling in your body, and you cannot go. Argh, no, I don't want to celebrate. You need to. You are now playing for another team."
"You showed respect when you were there, and you gave everything to the club, the badge, and the people. But now that you defend another shirt, you need to celebrate because you are part of another history."
Pochettino described Palmer as a very clever individual in the press conference, adding that he made him remember Angel Di Maria in his prime.
Palmer had been on top of his game this season with 10 goals and six assists in the Premier League for Chelsea.
Despite the club's poor performances in the league, Palmer has always been an exceptional player for them, even in big matches.
