Microsoft announced the departure of Sebastien Bubeck, its Vice President of GenAI research, who is set to join OpenAI, the prominent AI startup behind ChatGPT. While Bubeck’s role at OpenAI has not been specified, his move marks a significant shift within the AI sector. A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed his departure, emphasizing that the company looks forward to continuing its relationship with Bubeck through his work at OpenAI, a Microsoft-backed entity.

Bubeck played a key role in Microsoft's AI advancements, particularly in developing Phi LLMs, a series of smaller and more efficient large language models. Despite his exit, most of his coauthors on the project remain at Microsoft, continuing the development of these models.

This move follows a series of high-profile exits from OpenAI, including the resignation of its longtime Chief Technology Officer, Mira Murati, in September. However, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has dismissed speculation linking these departures to any planned restructuring of the company.

Bubeck's transition to OpenAI highlights the ongoing competition and collaboration between major players in the artificial intelligence industry as they push toward advancements in artificial general intelligence (AGI).
