Mitchell van der Gaag is set to replace Erik ten Hag on the touchline as Manchester United visit Everton at the Goodison Park on Sunday.
Mitchell van der Gaag will be in the United head coach’s place after the Dutchman picked up his third yellow card of the season in their matchup against Luton Town just before the international break.
The Dutchman will be assisted by Eric Ramsay, Steve McClaren, and former South African international Benni McCarthy at Goodison Park.
Van der Gaag moved to Old Trafford to support Erik ten Hag last summer after also serving him as an assistant at Ajax.
Though we might see him as an assistant now, Mitchell van der Gaag has previously coached clubs in Portugal, Cyprus, and the Netherlands.
Mitchell van der Gaag also spent two years at the Scottish Premiership with club Motherwell, where he was a Dutch youth international.
Futballnews understands that he has previously suffered a heart scare back in 2013 whilst managing in Portugal, almost dying during a match.
He was the then manager of Belenenses and he reportedly collapsed in the team's 1-0 win over Maritimo.
The Dutchman required two shocks from a defibrillator to save his life and that pushed him to take a long break from football.
Speaking at the time, Mitchell van der Gaag explained: "I'm alive today, it was a very violent thing that happened."
"I had a heart problem, some time ago, before arriving at Belenenses."
"I have a pacemaker and defibrillator. On Saturday during the game I felt bad and received two shocks and the unit saved my life."
"I have to leave work, because life is more important. Now my doctor is my coach."
Mitchell van der Gaag is a Dutch professional football coach and former player who was born on 22 October 1971 and played as a center-back. He is currently the assistant manager of Manchester United.
The Dutchman made 208 Eredivisie appearances and scored 19 goals, for NEC, Sparta Rotterdam, PSV, and Utrecht.
He also enjoyed successful spells at Motherwell in the Scottish Premier League and Marítimo in Portugal's Primeira Liga, playing 174 total games for the latter and scoring 19 times.
As a manager, he has led many teams in Europe which include Marítimo and Belenenses in Portugal, as well as Excelsior and NAC in his country.
