The World Health Organization stated on Sunday that the monkeypox outbreak posed a moderate global danger.

The World Health Organization also stated that the abrupt and unexpected presence of monkeypox in non-endemic nations shows that transmission may have occurred for an unknown period of time.

A case of monkeypox in a non-endemic nation is considered an outbreak, according to the WHO.

While the virus is in West African lineage has therefore been identified from case samples thus far, most confirmed cases with travel histories indicated travel to nations in Europe and North America, rather than from West or Central Africa, where the monkeypox virus is endemic.

Monkeypox confirmation in people who haven't visited an endemic location is unusual, and even one case of the disease in a non-endemic country is considered an epidemic.

While the majority of cases are not linked to travel from endemic areas, Member States are reporting a limited number of cases among Nigerian travelers, as has been reported previously.

780 laboratory-confirmed cases have been confirmed around the world as of June 2, 2022.

This indicates a 523-percentage-point increase in laboratory-confirmed cases. As of June 2, 2022, there have been no deaths in non-endemic nations related to the current monkeypox outbreak; nonetheless, cases and deaths continue to be recorded from endemic countries.

Preliminary data from polymerase chain reaction assays show that the Monkeypox virus strains discovered in Europe and other non-endemic countries belong to the West African clade.
