Musk’s xAI Plans Major Supercomputer Expansion in Memphis

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, is set to significantly expand its supercomputer, Colossus, in Memphis, Tennessee, aiming to house over one million GPUs, up from its current 100,000. The move is part of xAI’s efforts to compete with rivals like OpenAI, according to the Greater Memphis Chamber.

Key partners in the expansion include Nvidia, which supplies the GPUs, and Dell and Super Micro, which assemble the server racks. These companies will establish operations in Memphis as part of the project.

Colossus is essential to xAI’s AI advancements, including training its chatbot, Grok. The expansion highlights Musk’s escalating competition with OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman, as Musk recently filed a lawsuit accusing OpenAI and Microsoft of attempting to monopolize the AI market.

However, the project may face scrutiny over its environmental impact. In August, the Southern Environmental Law Center urged Tennessee officials to investigate whether xAI is using gas turbines to power Colossus without proper air permits.
