Nigerian singer Panshak Henry Zamani popularly known as Ice Prince has stated that his hit song "Oleku" featuring Brymo is the first Nigerian song to be regarded as an Afrobeats song.

In a recent interview with Echo Room, Ice Prince revealed his own story about the origin of the Afrobeats genre saying his song "Oleku" was one of the first songs to be playlisted on BBC Radio. Ice Prince said they didn't know what to call Nigerian music at the time because it was still new so they decided to add an S to make it Afrobeats.

Mentioning few people who worked with him and can testify to what he is saying, Ice Prince revealed that the Oleku song is the first song in Nigeria to get the Afrobeats label. The interviewer who countered his statement said Afrobeats was a name given by a UK disc jockey known as DJ Abranti. Surprisingly, Ice Prince disclosed that the same DJ Abranti was the one who created the playlist which his song was listed on.


Ice Prince is a 39-year old Nigerian singer, rapper and songwriter from Niger State. Ice Prince who rose to fame with his hit song "Oleku" which is one of the most remixed songs of all time. Ice Prince started writing songs in 1999 before going on to form a mudci group with his group of friends. He was studying Zoology at the University of Jos but didn't graduate due to financial issues. Apart from his classic hit Oleku, Ice Prince has other songs in his discography like "Aboki", "Superstar", "Juju", "More" among others.
