NAFDAC issues warning to public against consuming artificially ripened fruits
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, (NAFDAC) has issued a warning to the online, warning them against consuming fruits that have been ripened artificially.
These fruits are usually artificially ripened with calcium carbide. NAFDAC exoressed their concern over the illegal sales of th3s3 fruits and other substandard regulated products.
They are commited to removing such substandard products from the market.
They revealed how they have taken joke of such artificial ripening of some fruits and they make use of calcium carbide.
They revealed that this is very dangerous to human health.
The also shared that the ripening of a fruits is a part of its development and this makes it sweeter and more nutritious.
This was revealed during the NAFDAC Media Sensitization Workshop on Dangers of Drug Hawking and Ripening of Fruits with Calcium Carbide. This took place in Abuja yesterday
It was the Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Moji Adeyeye who revealed all these.
She then advised Nigerians to stay away from doing such because its dangerous to their health.
She also revealed that Calcium carbide generally contains some impurities like arsenic, lead particles etc. These are really harmful to human.
She shared that consuming such may lead to cancer, heart, kidney and liver failure.
It could also lead to difficulty in swallowing, vomiting, etc.
Hse revealed that NAFDAC has commissioned a scientific study on the best approach towards reducing the health hazards that are brought about by the artificial ripening of fruits with carbides.
