The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has revealed that 70% of the food exported from Nigeria were rejected abroad.

It was the Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, who revealed this yesterday.

She mentioned that over 70% of the food that was exported from the country were rejected and this led to serious financial losses to those who export these goods and also the country at large.

She revealed that this can be corrected if NAFDAC and some other government agencies at the ports are strengthened.

This was in a statement which was released by NAFDAC during the official commissioning of the new NAFDAC office located in Murtala Muhammed International Airport/Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc, in Lagos.

She revealed that the deplorable state of trade facilitation for regulated products which have been leaving the country has continued to be a serious concern for NAFDAC.

She also mentioned that NAFDAC is taking steps to respond to these setbacks and their response is collaboration with government agencies at the ports. This is so that they can ensure the goods to be exported are of good quality and they also meet up with the regulatory requirements of the importing countries.

She said the need for pre-shipment testing and certification and also regulation of export-packaging so as to improve quality is needed. This will also minimize the rejections of some goods.
