NAFDAC seals warehouse facility of contraband tomato paste and arrests one
The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control, (NAFDAC) has sealed a warehouse facility of imported contraband tomato paste. This was a distribution warehouse in Rivers State. This incident happened on Thursday, May 18, 2023.
The NAFDAC Assistant Chief Regulatory Officer in Lagos, Mr. Adeniran Kazeem, was the one who revealed this.
He revealed this after a man named Mr Obiora John had been arrested. This man is the Managing Director of Integrated Wholesales Services Limited in Trans-Amadi Layout. He was arrested over alleged importation and distribution of contraband tomato paste.
This tomato paste is on the list of the Federal Government of contraband importation products in Nigeria.
It is alleged that this man had removed the seal placed on his facility which the agency had placed in November 2022. This was without the approval of the agency.
The agency revealed that the accountant of the company had told told that the company had stopped the importation and distribution of contraband tomato paste since 2020.
They had then found this to be false as they found tomato which was manufactured in 2022 at the facility.
After checking the company’s records, they also discovered that there has been importation and distribution of the products till now.
Mr Kazeem revealed the reason the agency is sealing contraband drinks and food distribution companies in Nigeria is so that they can give way for local manufacturers in Nigeria.
He also went ahead to advise people to stop patronising those distributing such contraband materials
They will investigate this man who has been arrested and prosecute him.
They will also make sure that all importation of contraband products into the country will be stopped.
Mr Obiora John who was arrested said that he had removed the seal on his facility because he could do so after he had made payment through remittance to NAFDAC.
