NAHCO Secures Approval to Handle Radioactive Shipments – A Game-Changer for Aviation Logistics ✈️⚛️

The Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc (NAHCO) has received Federal Government approval to handle shipments containing radioactive materials, marking a major milestone in the Nigerian aviation industry.

This approval was jointly issued by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) in a communique following their February 25, 2025, meeting in Abuja.

Key Highlights of the Approval

Lifting of Import/Export Restrictions: Importers and exporters of radioactive materials can now use NAHCO’s facilities for shipment handling.
Compliance with Safety Regulations: NAHCO has established strict protocols to ensure 100% adherence to safety and regulatory requirements.
Formation of a Technical Committee: A team will oversee the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between NCAA and NNRA, signed in September 2023.
Joint Training & Emergency Preparedness: Plans are in place for regular training and drills to ensure safe handling procedures.

Industry Reactions

Saheed Lasisi, NAHCO’s Group Executive Director, Commercial & Business Development, described the approval as a significant relief for importers and exporters facing logistical challenges. He emphasized that NAHCO is committed to solving these issues for clients, including international airlines and oil companies (IOCs).

Similarly, Olumuyiwa Olumekun, Group Managing Director/CEO of NAHCO, thanked NCAA and NNRA for their trust and approval. He reassured stakeholders that the company has trained professionals and rigorous processes in place to handle radioactive shipments safely and efficiently.

What This Means for the Aviation Sector

This landmark approval positions NAHCO as a key player in specialized cargo handling, reinforcing its reputation for efficiency, compliance, and industry leadership. It also paves the way for smoother import and export operations in critical sectors such as healthcare, energy, and research.
