The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has fined Channels Television over Baba Ahmed's interview.

They have given a fine of N5 million Naira to Channels Television.
This fine is for breaking the broadcasting law during an interview with Baba-Ahmed.

There was an interview program with Dr Datti Baba-Ahmed, who is the candidate for Vice president for the Labour Party.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) obtained a letter on Friday, March 31st in Abuja and this letter contained this. The letter was addressed to the Chief Executive Officer of Channels television station. The letter was dated March 27, 2023.

The letter was titled “Broadcast of an Inciting Interview, A Sanction”.

This letter was signed by the commission’s Director-General Balarabe Ilelah.

In this letter, we got to know that the NBC had monitored the interview of Baba-Ahmed which was live.

Dr Baba-Ahmed mentioned during the interview that it will be unconstitutional to swear in an elected president on May 29, 2023, and this is because of the election irregularities

The letter also mentioned that this live broadcast was capable of causing public disorder so they saw the broadcast to have violated some sections of the broadcasting code.

This, according to him, includes the section that said no broadcast shall encourage, or be offensive to the public or make reference to any one in offensive manner.

He mentioned that Channels Television had been told by the NBC to put the interest of the public at heart before they broadcast any programme.

So based on the following, Channels Television has been fined to pay a fee of N5 million Naira.

He also mentioned that if Channels Television had any further infraction, it would attract a higher penalty.

They have advised Channels TV to pay this fine within 2 weeks from the day they received the letter or face further penalty
