NDLEA reveals 14.3m Nigerians are involved in drug abuse

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA) have shared a shocking revelation of the number of Nigerians involved in drug abuse. The agency recently revealed that approximately 14.3 million Nigerians are abusing drugs.

It was Ibiba Odili who is the Ogun state Commander of the NDLEA who revealed this recently. He shared this during the Launch of 'the War Against Drug Abuse' which was held yesterday, Saturday in Abeokuta, Ogun state.

They revealed that these 14.3 million Nigerians who are involved in drug abuse are within the ages of 15 years and 64 years.
She also shared that more women are now involved in drug abuse than they used to be.

She revealed that this number is quite alarming as well as the number of women who are now in this category. She revealed that 1 out of every 4 drug users is a woman.

She shared that according to a survey which was carried out in 2018, They discovered that the most commonly abused drug in Nigeria is cannabis.

She revealed how sad it is that women are abusing drugs because women play a traditional role in the community to build the children and if these women are drug abusers, what sort of role model would they be and what would they teach children.

She revealed how Nigeria used to be a transit country for drug trafficking but now are major consumers of these drugs and are even producing it.

She shared that from their survey, they discovered that the younger ones are even creating new ways to get high using other household substances like methylated spirit, the head of matches, nail polish etc.

She revealed that producing these drugs have their consequences and such areas may suffer from cancer and some other terminal illnesses with time.

She then pleaded with stakeholders to quickly intervene to address this issue which is rapidly growing in Nigeria.
