Newcastle United have barred Manchester United from signing Dan Ashworth in a shock move by the Tyneside-based outfit.

Dan Ashworth, 54, has been a prime target for new Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim to take up a key role in Man United's football operations as sporting director.

As per reports, Dan Ashworth was linked to the Manchester United job due to his connection with the sports director at INEOS Group Sir Dave Brailsford, who is said to be Sir Jim Ratcliffe's right-hand man.

Manchester United officials, under the auspices of Sir Jim, reportedly met with Ashworth for a foray into the new Man United project under Sir Jim and have agreed personal terms with the football chief.

Ashworth is said to have been impressed with the Man United project and is ready to take up the role.

On Sunday, February 18, David Ornstein of the Athletic reported that Dan Ashworth has asked to leave Newcastle United.

Apparently, Dan Ashworth's exit push from Newcastle United is related to the interest by Manchester United to sign him but it appears Newcastle United are not giving in easily.

In an exclusive report by The Mail, Newcastle United have placed Dan Ashworth on a gardening leave due to his call to leave the club.

The move by Newcastle United to place Ashworth on gardening leave means Manchester United will not be able to sign Dan Ashworth until 2026 when the gardening leave will come to an end.

Nevertheless, it is not a close route for Manchester United. United can still weather the 'gardening leave hurdle' but must pay a 'significantly higher compensation' to Newcastle United to sign the football chief early.

As of the time of filing this report, United are yet to send a proposal to Newcastle United for Ashworth but the proposal is expected this week.

Newcastle United's recent posturing is a message to the Old Trafford club that they are not ready to let go of Ashworth with a fluke of an offer.
