NGX All-Share Index Surges 283.45% Since 2020! ✨

The Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) has achieved remarkable growth in the 2020s, recovering strongly from a challenging 2015–2019 period. Here’s a breakdown of the key highlights:

Key Numbers
• All-Share Index (ASI): Soared 283.45%, rising from 26,842.07 points (end of 2019) to 102,926.40 points (end of 2024).

• 2024 Growth Alone: 37.65%, fueled by investor appetite for equities amidst low yields in fixed-income markets.

• Market Capitalization: Expanded by ₦49.97 trillion, from ₦12.79 trillion (2019) to ₦62.76 trillion (2024).

Drivers of Growth

1️⃣ Macroeconomic Reforms: Strategic policies by the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Ministry of Finance.

2️⃣ Naira Depreciation: Made equities an attractive hedge against inflation.

3️⃣ High-Profile Listings: Companies like Geregu Power Plc, Transcorp Power Plc, Aradel Holdings, and BUA Foods significantly boosted market activity.

Stakeholder Recognition

During the NGX Closing Gong Ceremony, key players like Abimbola Babalola (Head of Trading & Products) commended stockbrokers and stakeholders for their role in driving growth. Leaders from the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers (CIS) and Association of Securities Dealing Houses of Nigeria (ASHON) reaffirmed their commitment to market development.

Challenges Ahead

Despite this success, hurdles remain:

• High Transaction Costs

• Information Asymmetry

• Monetary Tightening

• Low Trading Volumes

A Proshare 2025 report recommends listing national assets like the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to unlock liquidity.

Outlook for 2025

Temi Popoola, CEO of the NGX Group, emphasized that Nigeria’s capital market remains a hub of resilience and innovation. Reforms and new listings are expected to sustain growth, enhance liquidity, and boost investor confidence in the coming years.
