Earlier in the week, the Nigeria Football Federation President, Amaju Pinnick announced that the Super Eagles will be traveling to Porto Novo by water for their crucial match against the Squirrels of Benin. The reverse feature was played in November 2019 when the Super Eagles came from a goal down to claim victory in Akwa-Ibom, thanks to goals from Victor Osimhen and Samuel Kalu.
Nigeria lead Group L with two games to go, one against the Benin Republic and Lesotho. If the group stands like this on Wednesday morning, then Nigeria qualifies for the AFCON.
The Eagles will be seeking to do a double over the Squirrels, the Squirrels are also well prepared for the encounter, following talks from their camp. They are reportedly said to be missing Stephen Sessegnon, who was the goalscorer in the reversed feature.
The Nigerian boys left Lagos Cowry jetty, earlier today and were seen to have occupied three boats.
Everyone looks forward to the crucial match, as Nigeria’s German coach, Gernot Rohr says, “We want to finish our qualification on a positive note, and the two matches against Benin and Lesotho are very important,”
“Of course, we know that Benin is difficult to beat after our last game in Uyo [Nigeria won 2-1] and we need at least a point against them to qualify for next year’s Afcon.”
The match is set for 5 pm on Saturday and will be televised by local channels, AIT and NTA.
