What is NLC?


The full meaning of NLC IS Nigeria Labour Congress. They are an organization for trade unions in Nigeria. They were originally the only national federation of trade unions in Nigeria, and this was in 1978. The Nigeria Labour Congress was founded in the year 1978 by WAHAB GOODLUCK. Their headquarters is in Abuja, Nigeria. When the NLC was founded in 1978, 42 industrial unions were affiliated with it at the time. It had been established as the only trade union federation which was legal and recognized.

Their Aims in the NLC include promotion of the rights of their workers. They aim to promote the well-being of their pensioners as well and they also work towards giving Nigerian workers, employers as well as the government an equal voice. NLC also gives focus to Education, Protection of Jobs, employment, provision of a safe environment for work, policies and legislation and gender quality among many others.


Who is the current president of the Nigeria Labour congress

The current president of the Nigeria Labour congress is Comrade Joe Ajaero. He was elected as the National president of the Nigeria Labour Congress in February 2023. He took over the reins of the NLC from the former president, Ayuba Philibus Wabba who served as the NLC president from 2015 to 2023. Ayuba Wabba is an activist and a public health specialist. He was elected as the NLC president in March 2015 and served for 2 terms before handing over to Joe Ajaero in 2023.


Who was the first president of the Nigeria Labour Congress

The first president of Nigeria Labour congress (NLC) was the founding father who is Wahab Goodluck. The Organization was formed in 1978 and the founder, Wahab became the founding President of NLC. He was born on the 11th of July 1923 and passed away at the age of 68 years on the 10th of September 1991.



Joe Ajaero

Comrade Joe Ajaero is a well-known Nigerian unionist and a journalist. He is the president of the Nigeria Labour congress. He was born on the 17th of December 1964 in Owerri, Imo state. He is currently 58 years old. He is married with children. He graduated from the University of Nsukka in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in education. He also obtained his master’s degree from the University of Lagos in 1998 with a degree in Industrial and Labour Relations.

He has served in various positions over the years including serving as the Chairman and Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, served in the National Executive council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists and many more. He is a member of various organizations including the Nigeria Institute of Public Administration (NIPA), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Nigeria Industrial Relations Association (NIRA) and many others.

Nigeria Labour congress strike

The Nigeria Labour congress announced that they would begin a strike on the 3rd of October 2023 due to the removal of the Subsidy on fuel by the President of Nigeria, President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The subsidy placed on fuel had been running for decades unto President Tinubu scrapped it and this led to the decision taken by the NLC.


NLC strike update

The strike as mentioned earlier was brought about by the removal of the subsidy om fuel by the Federal Government. The update about the strike is the memorandum of understanding (MoU) which has been reached by both parties involved which are the Federal Government and NLC and TUC (Trade Union congress of Nigeria) on the 2nd of October 2023. They had issued the notice of a strike to begin on the 3rd of October but this later seized to be due to the agreement the aforementioned parties reached. The Federal government called for a meeting to discuss the strike before it began, and a conclusion was reached.

According to a statement which was released and signed by the Federal government, the NLC president, TUC president and other officials, part of the agreement reached include the following:
  • The Federal government will grant a sum of N35,000 as wage award to all Federal Govt workers until they have signed into law the new minimum wage.
  • Within a month of this agreement, which was reached, they would inaugurate a minimum wage committee.
  • From October 2023, the Federal government will suspend the collection of Value added task (VAT).
