Nigeria takes the lead as Canada's fastest-growing international student population between January to June 2023
A report on the Nigerian study permit trends has revealed Nigerians as Canada's fastest-growing international student population between January to June 2023. That means Canada is welcoming the highest percentage of Nigerians via the student visa route. In 2019, the Canadian government issued a little over 3,000 student visas to Nigerians but that number doubles in 2022 due to an increase in demand.
In the first half of 2023, over 43,000 applications were received by the Canadian government in which nearly 18,000 Canadian study permits were issued to the Nigerian Nationals. The report also disclosed that receiving over 43,000 study permits in the first half of 2023 has been recorded as Canada's second-largest cohort of inbound students.
In addition, the approval rates for study permits for Nigerians have continued to rise across the first six months of 2023, compared to the approval rates in 2020. The interesting part is that Nigerian students are evenly distributed across Canada spanning cities like Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, and New Brunswick. Each of these cities has received over 5% of study permits issued to Nigeria between January to June 2023.
