Nigerian footballer, Akinkunmi Amoo has reportedly been handed a one-year prison sentence by a court in Denmark for sexual assault.

Former BBC World Football reporter, Osasu Obayiuwana, confirmed the news of the footballer's sentencing via a tweet shared on his Twitter account.

Authorities in Denmark had initially presented criminal charges against Akinkunmi Amoo in April 2022, and afterwards in July and August 2022.

The trial over the allegations has been ongoing for months before this judgment was passed.

Amoo's misery apparently began in September 2022, when he was apprehended by Police in Denmark after he was accused of sexual assault.

The 21-year-old spent close to a month in confinement before he was released on bail in October 2022.

Akinkunmi Amoo was afterwards charged to court and he faced trial at the Copenhagen District Court for three indictments.

Those three charges are; rape in a sexual relationship other than intercourse, attempted rape, and violations of two other women.

The Copenhagen attacker was found guilty of all the charges in the Copenhagen District Court.

On Friday, the 23rd of June, 2023, “a dissenting magistrate” handed Amoo a one-year prison sentence for the felony committed.

Alongside the prison sentence, Akinkunmi Amoo will also be deported after he has served the jail term.

Additionally, the former Hammarby will reportedly be banned from entering Denmark for six years.

It is believed that Amoo will appeal the judgment, however, the date when the appeal will begin is not yet known to the public.

The 21-year-old was amongst the Golden Eaglets squad that featured at the U-17 World Cup where Nigeria crashed out in the round of 16.

Due to his excellent performances during the competition, he was snapped up Swedish side Hammarby on the 8th of June 2020.

He was impressive at Hammerby and that resulted in him earning a move to Danish giants FC Copenhagen for a transfer fee of €4.3 million in January 2022.

Since he joined the Danish Superliga side, he has made four appearances and scored just one goal.

Meanwhile, in another development, Nigerian Journalist, Adepoju Tobi Samuel, asserted that he discussed with Akinkunmi Amoo's elder brother and he revealed that the news about the 21-year-old “conviction to jail is not the correct narrative”.

The attacker was named in Nigeria's squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup play off encounter against Ghana in March 2022.

However, Amoo didn't get any minutes of action and he has afterwards not received another invitation to the Nigeria senior national team.

The 21-year-old was unavailable for most parts of the 2022/23 season as he has been battling with a ruptured knee ligament injury.

Akinkunmi Amoo was expected to return back to training on the 29th of June, 2023 but it is uncertain if he will be returning on that said date, due to recent realities.

The U-17 Golden Eaglet star penned a five-year deal with FC Copenhagen in 2022, a deal that was a record breaking transfer for Hammarby.
