Nigeria's 1st Emeritus professor, Umaru Shehu pases away at 97 years
Nigeria's 1st Emeritus professor, Umaru Shehu has passed away at the age of 97 years. He passed away yesterday morning, Monday, October 2, 2023. He is recognised as Nigeria’s first emeritus professor. He was also the chairman of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria (IHVN).
Umaru Shehu was also the first first Professor of Community Health in Morthern Nigeria. He was a famous Nigerian academic and professor of medicine. It was the Borno Elders Forum who announced the news of his death in a statement which was released recently.
Their statement read “We regret to announce the demise of our founding father of both Kanem Borno Historical and Cultural Foundation (KBHCF) – Professor Emeritus Umar Shehu, CFR. The late Shehu himself, Shettima Monguno, and Maina Damchida were the founding fathers of the Borno Elders Forum, all the three have now left us, he was the last of the titans, May Allah have mercy upon them. Professor Emeritus Umar Shehu died this morning. Aged 97, he left behind his immediate family and all of us in Nigeria. His burial comes up at his residence, GRA Maiduguri, at 5 pm today.
He was born on the 8th of December 1930 in Maiduguri. His primary education was in Maiduguri between 1935 and 1940. He attended secondary school from 1941 to 1947. He first studied at Kaduna College in Zaria before moving to University College Ibadan in 1948 and graduated in 1953. After this he went to the University of London where he got his medical degree.
