Nigeria's first chartered accountant, Akintola Williams, passes away at the age of 104
Chief Akintola Williams who was Nigeria's first chartered accountant has passed away. He passed away recently at the age of 104 years. He was born on the 9th of August 1919 and passed away yesterday, the 11th of September, 2023.
Recall that just last month he had celebrated his 104th birthday. He has now passed on. He was the first Nigerian to qualify as a chartered accountant. It was the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, (ICAN) confirmed his death yesterday. He was said to have passed away in his sleep at his home in Ikoyi, Lagos.
Early Life
Akintola Williams became Africa’s first chartered accountant at the age of 30 years. He had his primary education at Olowogbowo Methodist Primary School, in Lagos and for his secondary school education, he attended the CMS Grammar School in Lagos.
He studied at the University of London in 1944 and graduated with a bachelor of commerce in 1946. He became a qualified chartered accountant in England in 1949. In 1952, after returning to Nigeria after becoming a chartered accountant, he resigned from the Inland Revenue where he was working and started his accounting firm, Akintola Williams and Co. His firm was also the first indigenous chartered accounting firm in Africa.
