NLC president, Joe Ajaero arrested recently in Imo state

The president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has being arrested. Mr Joe Ajaero is the current president of the NLC and he was arrested recently in Imo state. It was the officers of the Nigeria Police Force, who made the arrest in Owerri, Imo state.

This incident occured on Wednesday, November 1st, 2023. It was Mr Benson Upah who is the Head of Information, of the Nigeria Labour Congress who revealed the news of the arrest. He revealed this while speaking to some newsmen. He stated that Mr Joe was apprehended at the NLC state council secretariat. They aren't sure of the location he was taken to.

He also revealed that it had been some heavily armed police officers who picked him up. Recall NLC planned to start a strike in Imo state today, the 1st of November. The members of the congress had been mobilised to commence this strike in Imo state.

The president, Mr Ajaero had revealed last Sunday that the government in Imo State were guilty of violating the rights of the workers in Imo state. This had been what led to the decision to embark on a strike. He e also claimed that the Governor of Imo state, Hope Uzodimma had neglected the welfare of workers in Imo. He also spoke about the non payment of the workers salary for about 20 months and many other unfair issues. He also stated as part of the reason for the strike that about 10,000 pensioners were labelled as ghost pensioners and this was a wrong labelling. Because of this, they had been unpaid for over 22 months.
