Manchester City and Chelsea shared the spoils in a heated encounter at the Etihad Stadium.

The Cityzens were eyeing a potential defeat following a remarkable goal by Raheem Sterling in the 42nd minute.

However, seven minutes before the expiration of the game, Rodri netted the equalizer for Pep Guardiola's side, sending the stadium into a frenzy and silence for the traveling supporters.

The Brazilian latched onto the ball after it was blocked by Levi Cowill, smashing it back towards goal, with Chelsea goalie Djordje Petrovic looking like he had it covered.

Unfortunately, a deflection off Axel Disasi's thigh resulted in the ball ascending over the goalkeeper into the roof of the post, leaving supporters of the Blues in dismay.

Manchester City enjoyed the larger share of possession in the game, but they weren't as sharp as needed in attack.

In the opening half, after Sterling had put Chelsea ahead, Erling Haaland had a glorious chance to equalize 3 minutes into stoppage time but he couldn't bury the chance.

Nathan Ake delivered a sublime cross into the middle of the area for Haaland, but the Norwegian couldn't power his header on target, as it bounced wide.

In the 56th minute, Ben Chiwell served a fantastic cross in from the left, with Kyle Walker's touch putting it towards goal, thankfully for the Cityzens, Ederson Moraes was on hand to block it.

The Brazilian goalie's stop returns to Chiwell, who struck a good attempt but Ederson's save puts it towards Ruben Dias, who clears it on the line.

Twelves minutes before the expiration of the encounter, Erling Haaland missed another great opportunity, after Kevin De Bruyne delivered a fabulous cross into the box.

Haaland tried to create space for himself by moving away from the Chelsea defender, but his subsequent header also flew over the bar - an afternoon that the poacher will want to forget in a hurry.

Following Arsenal's thumping victory over Burnley during the afternoon, the Gunners moved past Manchester City into the 2nd spot, with the Cityzens now occupying the 3rd spot with a game in hand.

Chelsea still sit 10th on the Premier League log, with 35 points from 25 league matches.

It will be interesting to see how the title race shapes up, and where Mauricio Pochettino's side will finish at the end of the season.

Manchester City return to action on February 20, 2024, facing Brentford in their Matchday 18 Premier League encounter (a rescheduled game).

Meanwhile, Chelsea return to action on February 25, 2024, facing Liverpool in the final of the 2023/24 Carabao Cup - a game that certainly promises to be fascinating.

That encounter offers Mauricio Pochettino the chance for his first silverware ever in English football, having won no trophy during his spell at Tottenham Hotspur.
