A woman known as Winifred has told her story about how she began to notice some patches on her skin after she gave birth to her second child in 2021. While speaking to BBC News, Winifred said when it started, she thought it was a postpartum reaction which caused eczema.

Later on, it became noticeable and she could no longer wear short dresses or short sleeved shirts in the open because of exposure to sunlight. It was when she visited a dermatologist that she found out she had vitiligo.

Winifred said she even nicknamed herself Native Doctor because she felt she looked like one. Her voice was also affected and it became more coarse. She revealed that her dermatologist prescribed a skincare cream for her to rub on the patches and assured her that her condition will improve with consistency.

As a word of advice, Winifred urged all mothers to always put themselves first and make sure their mental health is intact in their motherhood journey.

Vitiligo is a skin condition that causes a person to lose his or her skin color. This occurs when a person's pigment producing skin cells die or stop functioning.

Vitiligo can be caused by a disorder in the immune system, a skin problem such as sunburn, stress or heredity. There is no cure for vitiligo yet but there are maintenance treatments that can be used to reduce the rate of depigmentation in the body.
