Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has expressed that Marcus Rashford has had a “wake-up call” after being dropped due to a disciplinary issue.

Solskjaer said that the onus of responsibility lies with Rashford, and the Englishman must galvanize himself to be more consistent than ever.

Marcus Rashford was absent from Manchester United training after he was reportedly seen at a nightclub in Belfast, having a bash up till 3:00 AM.

Due to this, the 26-year-old was absent from the club's 4-2 FA Cup 4th-round win over Newport County in January 2024.

Days after the incident, Manchester United said they had dealt with the “internal disciplinary matter” and Rashford found the back of the net upon his return to the squad.

Marcus Rashford netted the opener in the Red Devils' 4-3 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on February 1, 2024, with a towering strike into the top corner and he was given a thumbs-up by the fans for his brilliance.

The England international has scored just 6 goals this campaign, a significant drop from his career-best 30 goals in the 2022/23 season.

Ole Gunner Solskjaer in an interview with Reuters in the south Indian city of Bengaluru noted that Rashford's performance last season was “fantastic” but he needs to be consistent.

The 50-year-old said: “Obviously I managed Marcus for three years and I know him.

“It's not my job to go out and discuss his performances, but last season he was fantastic and it's about consistency in football.”

The former Manchester United boss stated that Marcus Rashford alongside his teammates haven't been magnificent this term, but he hopes that following his recent ordeal, he will be galvanized to do better.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: “Marcus and many others haven't hit the heights this season. I'm sure he had a wake-up call last week and hopefully, that will spur him on.

“Is it the manager's job to get the best out of him, or is it mostly himself or any player's responsibility to get the best out of yourself? I think that's more it.”

Solskjaer aired these thoughts during the first leg of his Indian tour, which also includes visits to Mumbai and New Delhi.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who won several trophies during his playing days at Manchester United, including 6 Premier League titles, 2 FA Cups, and 1 UEFA Champions League said that he is confident of Rashford returning to his best.

He said: “He's had a fantastic career, some ups and downs.

“Now we hope he's going to hit that consistency because I know and we all know there's a top player there.

“It's difficult to be at the top all the time, but it takes sacrifice.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked as Manchester United manager in November 2021, following a run of bad results and he is hoping that Erik Ten Hag can lead his former side back to glory.

Ten Hag led the Red Devils to the league cup title last term, alongside the FA Cup final before losing to rivals Manchester City 2-1.

Manchester United also finished the 2022/23 season in third position, earning the club a place in the UEFA Champions League for the 2023/24 season.

However, the Old Trafford giants currently sit sixth on the log, with 38 points from 23 games, 8 points away from the top four.

Manchester United's best chance at winning a silverware this term is via the FA Cup and they have Nottingham Forest to face in the FA Cup 5th Round.

Meanwhile, Solskjaer also weighed in on Sir Jim Ratcliffe coming on board as a minority stakeholder, with the British billionaire saddled with the responsibility of handling the football aspect of the team.

He said that the acquisition of a 25% stake in the club by Ratcliffe has given fans new hopes of improvement for the club.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also talked about reports circulating in the media that Sir Jim Ratcliffe is looking at giving Old Trafford a facelift, with several infrastructural developments to be expected.

He said: “We have to move with the times and at the moment something has to happen.

“It's either renovation or a new stadium because we're falling behind if we're staying in the same place we have.

“It's going to divide fans for sure because history is important. But we traded The Cliff training ground, which was iconic for United, and the Busby Babes, with Carrington. It looks like we might have to build a new stadium.

Anyway, Manchester United return to action on Sunday, February 11, 2024, facing Aston Villa, in a Matchday 24 Premier League encounter.
