Oxlade reveals humble beginnings of sleeping under the bridge
Popular Nigerian singer Oxlade has revealed the humble beginnings of himself in his career before his fame. He recently shared how he used to sleep under the bridge.
His real name is Ikuforiji Olaitan but he is known popularly as Oxlade. His most famous songs include Ku Lo Sa which he released in 2022 alongside the remix with Camilla Cabello, and another song titled Ojuju which he released in 2021.
He recently shared his beginning stage during a recent interview while starring as a guest on the Afrobeats podcast with Adesope live. He shared that he used to sleep under the bridge in Ojuelegba. This happened after he had run away from home.
He shared that his family told him to get a 9 to 5 job saying he wasn't fit to do music. This was what caused him to run away from the house.
He says when he began sleeping under the bridge, he would let the local merchants know he was there so he wouldn't be mistaken for an intruder. He shared that there were some days he got to sleep at a friend's house.
He said “Back then, I used to sleep at Ojuelegba barrack bridge sometimes and sometimes I would spend 3 days in my friend's house"
He also added that "if the see finish is too much, I would go to the bridge" meaning if he and his friends started having issues, he would return to sleeping under the bridge
He says that he had to take on some menial jobs to survive and would sell BRT bus tickets to BRT passengers and also serve food to customers in a plaza. He revealed that leaving his house changed his life because that was how he learnt to hustle.
He also shared that there were times he felt overwhelmed and wanted to return him but he was able to survive by surrounding himself with good people.
He says soon after all these, he was able to release his first music.
