Panic as a gas cylinder explodes in Iganmu, Lagos State
A gas cylinder exploded within the National Arts Theatre around Iganmu, Lagos State, at night. The reason for the sudden explosion wasn't stated but it was assumed to be caused by a leaked gas cylinder. The building where the casualty occurred was encapsulated in smoke and fire as the explosion sound became louder. Residents in the environs thought it was an explosion sound from fireworks until they saw that a building was on fire.
When the explosion occurred, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Team around the area sprang into action and quickly worked on containing the fire. Some claimed that the explosion was too loud to have been caused by one gas cylinder because those around Apapa Road, Yaba, and Constain felt it. It isn't clear if lives were lost but the building where the incident occurred was seriously damaged
Gas cylinders are mostly used in Nigerian homes to cook. As effective as these cylinders are, they can be very deadly once they start leaking. It is advisable to discard expired cylinders and the ones that have begun leaking to avoid endangering people's lives.
