Pep Guardiola has given an interesting response to Trent Alexander-Arnold, following his comments about how Manchester City and Liverpool value trophies.

Arnold claimed that due to the finances spent by the Cityzens, the trophies won by Liverpool will mean more to the Reds and their fan base than Manchester City.

Trent Alexander-Arnold said: “Looking back on this era, although they've won more titles than us and have probably been more successful, our trophies will mean more to us and our fanbase because of the situations at both clubs, financially."

Ahead of the big clash at Anfield involving Manchester City and Liverpool, Guardiola offered his comments on the statements by the defender.

Pep Guardiola refused to touch on Arnold's comment but wished the Englishman a speedy recovery from his lingering injury.

Guardiola, who has enjoyed a trophy-laden stint at Manchester City said:

“I wish him a speedy recovery and to come back to pitch as soon as possible.”

Pep Guardiola led the Cityzens to the treble - Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League last campaign, with Manchester City becoming the second English club to do so.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp has come into the defense of Trent-Alexander Arnold, expressing that the defender's comments were not intended to be disrespectful.

Klopp, who has won every major trophy at Anfield and will be exiting the Reds at the end of the campaign said:

“I’m not sure how often in this club we have to say that you know how much we respect the opponent, in this case, City."

The German tactician lauded Pep Guardiola and the players of Manchester City, including; Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden, and Erling Haaland.

However, he stressed that there is a symbiotic connection between Liverpool and the fans.

The former Borussia Dortmund boss said: “He’s born in Liverpool. He played through all youth teams. What would you think in this situation?

“One of our slogans that I love is ‘this means more’. And it means more to us. We have no clue what it means to other people, but what happens here means more to us.”

Jurgen Klopp also painted a picture that occurred years ago, after they lost the UEFA Champions League final, he said:

“Two years ago we had a parade after winning the League Cup and FA Cup, losing the Champions League final the night before, losing the league by a point.

“Tell me a city where you have a parade where it looks like we won all these trophies without having them.

“The club is special to us. If it’s not special to other people, and we cannot change that, but if we feel it like that, why shouldn’t we be allowed to say it?”

Anyway, many have also pointed towards finances being the reason for Manchester City's success, however, it is important to note that trophies also bring a surreal feeling to the fans.

Liverpool supporters are seen as the most passionate in England, as they serenade Anfield, with the “You will never walk alone” chants that envelope the stadium and put the team in a trance-like mood.

Manchester City have experienced massive successes across board, and their supporters have moved from a state of dejection to elation.

The Cityzens didn't start the 2000s era on a happy note, but they have become a powerhouse in European football after Sheik Mansour acquired the club from Thai politician and businessman Thaksin Shinawatra.

Moreover, Manchester City visit Anfield to play Liverpool on Sunday, March 10, 2024, in a fixture that is expected to give a pointer into where the title could be headed.
