Petrol scoopers burnt to death as tanker explodes in Liberia
In a recent occurrence in Liberia, many people were burnt to death while trying to scoop petrol from a fallen tanker. These people gathered around a petrol tanker which had fallen on its side and began to scoop fuel from the tanker and suddenly. The tanker exploded killing and injuring many. This is not the first time one would hear of such incidents however, it’s sad that no matter how many times news like this comes up, people still don’t learn. Its understandable, the situation in many countries and the cost of fuel, however, trying to scoop fuel from a fallen tanker is very dangerous.
The petrol tanker had fallen at the side of the road and residents in the area gathered around immediately. This incident happened in central Liberia, which was about 80 miles from the capital city which is Monrovia. The Tanker broke down and fell into a ditch at the side of the road. A man took videos of people rushing to scoop petrol and he caught the moment the tanker exploded. Many were lucky to have been able to escape, but not everyone was that lucky. Some who stood very close to the tanker were caught in the explosion and died. Some others were injured from the incident as well.
It was Dr Francis Kateh who is the chief medical officer in Liberia who confirmed the news to newsmen. He revealed that it was hard to determine the number of victims who were affected by the explosion because some body’s had been burnt to ashes. He then gave an estimate of not less than 40 people who were killed in the explosion. The police have also revealed that no less than 30 were injured in the incident. They revealed that many people got burned in the fire explosion.
