Plastic pollution is one of the prevalent environmental hazards threatening the Nigerian environment and the world at large.
For this reason, Plastic Free Rainy Season Sensitization Initiative, an NGO, has planned a three-month initiative directed at tackling the rate of plastic pollution in the country.
This was disclosed in a statement by the NGO's convener, Ejike Nwankwo. The initiative which is set to take effect from July 1 to September 30, 2023, has the backing of WAICA Reinsurance.
The West African Insurance Companies Association (WAICA) Reinsurance had the zeal to evoke inspiration from people to collectively reduce the rate of environmental pollution, limit flooding and enlighten people about the consequences of plastic pollution.
They are doing this as part of the company's corporate social responsibility.
Nwankwo said that collective participation in the challenge would reduce our dependence on single-use plastics, keeping them out of landfills.
He further stated that the NGO aims to "inspire people to adopt small, everyday actions that keep single-use plastics out of landfills, reduce environmental pollution, and mitigate the risk of urban flooding."
The impact will be felt faster if people were to work as a group to tackle issues of plastic pollution.
