Professor in Kaduna develops a mosquito repellent fabric

A Professor in Kaduna, who works in the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry in Kaduna State University developed a mosquito repellent fabric.

The professor who is Zakari Ladan has also gotten a research grant with some partners collaborating with him under the TETFund 2020 National Research Fund intervention.

It is said that this grant which he received is worth N27,020,027 (Twenty Seven Million Twenty Thousand and Twenty Seven Naira)

Professor Ladan is the major researcher in this research work.

The research they conducted focuses on producing a fabric which is mosquito-repellent. This mosquito repellent fabric will be embedded with some nanoparticles that are encapsulated with the active constituents of Vitex negundo bioactive compounds.

This was brought about in place of using treated nets to guard against mosquitos or even the insecticides which are commonly used now.

This fabric which was developed from the research conducted was made into night wear. Such wears were developed with other bio-products like the bio-insecticide sprays and repellents creams. These were formulated to control mosquito bites using the plant’s bioactive constituent.

The public relations officer of the Kaduna state university is Mr Adamu Nuhu Bargo, and he released a statement regarding this.

He mentioned that the project is titled “Development of an eco-friendly mosquito repellent fabric embedded with nanoparticles encapsulated with Vitex negundo bioactive compounds.”

He stated this was the first NRF/TETF fund grant which was won with the host Institution as the Kaduna state University.

They mentioned that this project has achieved its objectives.
