Quincy Promes has been jailed for six years for helping to smuggle 1363 kg of cocaine, but he is currently avoiding prison by staying in Russia.
Prosecutors in charge of his case believe Promes is untouchable in Russia, which prompted him not to come to the Netherlands for his drug trafficking trial.
In addition, the attacker is not expected to return to the Netherlands in the foreseeable future. The Court heard Promes had a guiding and facilitating role in illegal activity.
The hard drugs were intercepted after they were imported into Antwerp before a traced message revealed Promes involvement.
It was revealed that the cocaine arrived disguised as salt shipment in Brazil, South America. The two batches of the hard drugs, which were 650kg and 713 kg, arrived in January 2020.
The prosecutors believed that Promes wealth meant he had money to invest in the hard drug business, which means one step higher on the organizational ladder of the drug cartel.
It was revealed that the football star invested 200,000 euros in the cocaine business.
Although Promes lawyer told Dutch Newspaper AD that the football star will appeal his sentence, he denied the allegation put forward against him on importing, exporting, transporting, and possessing cocaine.
In addition, the Public Prosecution Service also found out about another 32-year-old suspect relating to the case, whose name was not disclosed.
The suspect was found guilty of importing, exporting, transporting, and possessing drugs.
Other crimes committed by the football star
In June 2023, Promes was sentenced to 18 months in prison for stabbing his own cousin. He was arrested in December 2020 by the security agency.
The court in the Netherlands charged Promes with assault on the cousin, but there were no cases of attempted murder or manslaughter.
Promes stabbed the cousin at a house party in Abcoude after the Spartak Moscow attacker got into an argument over a stolen necklace.
He was ordered to pay 7,000 euros in compensation to the victim.
