Varane has six months remaining on his Manchester United contract. He signed a three-year deal with the club in 2021 after joining from Real Madrid for £41m.
The 2018 World Cup winner has been instrumental for the Red Devils. He was key in Man United's resurgence last season under Erik ten Hag.
This season, his Man United fortunes has dipped as he struggles for game time since returning from injury.
With Sir Jim Ratcliffe helming affairs in Man United footballing operations, Varane was listed among out-of-favor players to leave the club.
United had until January 1, 2024 to trigger the extension clause on his contract but have refused to do so, as per The Sun.
This means Varane will be free to enter into transfer talks and negotiations with other clubs as the January transfer window opens today.
However, sources close to Manchester United have revealed the club is still bent on keeping Varane but on new terms of agreement.
The 30-year-old is among the highest-paid players at Manchester United with a weekly wage of £340,000.
United want a significant cut on his wages as well as a short contract duration due to his age.
The decision not to renew his deal is a deliberate ploy to allow the club negotiate a lesser weekly wage or allow him leave on a free transfer in June 2024.
Varane has made 74 appearances for Manchester United in all competitions since joining from Real Madrid in 2021.
