Real Madrid have dropped points in the LaLiga title race as they settle for a dramatic 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano at the Estadio de Vallecas.

The Los Blancos got off the mark with an early goal but had endured a nervy start to proceedings as a confident Rayo Vallecano side rolled out bodies up front to attack and contest for possession.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Lunin nearly shot himself in the foot when his poor pass was intercepted by Rayo Vallecano, who attempted a dangerous attack but were tamed by the visitors.

A minute after Lunin's blunder, Joselu fired Real Madrid into the lead. The goal was checked for VAR but was awarded and the LaLiga title hopefuls were in the front just three minutes into the game.

Rayo Vallecano were still under pressure after conceding as Real Madrid continued to mount pressure to secure the lead but it was still a nervy clash between the two teams as Vallecano put up a solid defensive and attacking display, covering swarthes of offensive and defensive distance to keep the visitors in check.

After a tight affair with limited chances from both teams, Rayo got a lifeline chance to level the score in the 26th minute. Camavinga appeared to have handled Trejo's volley. The incident called for a VAR check and a penalty was awarded after the check.

De Tomas made no mistake as he converted it perfectly to even the score for the hosts. Tomas fired straight at the middle while Lunin dived to his left.

Real Madrid committed more bodies forward trying to retake the lead but could find the back of the again before the break. Joselu's goal happened to be their only shot on target throughout the first half, with Rayo Vallecano looking set to force a draw and run out with a point given their competitive presence in the game. It ended 1-1 at the break.

Carlo Ancelotti made some substitutions to change the trajectory of the game in the second half but could not break down Rayo Vallecano's resilient display. Despite dominating proceedings, it was still a deadlock in Rayo Vallecano's half. The Los Blancos' only attempt on target happened to be Toni Kroos' powerful freekick which was pointed out by Rayo Vallecano goalkeeper.

At the end of the regulation time, it was still 1-1 with both sides mustering limited chances to weather the deadlock. Three minutes into the added time, Carvajal bagged his second yellow card in less than three minutes and was sent off.

The game ended with Real Madrid settling for a disappointing 1-1 draw at the blast of the final. Girona will now have the chance to close the gap on the LaLiga leaders to 3 points if they win their next game.
