Road to 2023 elections, the journey so far

The next election in Nigeria is coming up in less than a year. At this stage, we can all conclude that the road to 2023 is very rough and we have only just begun.

At this stage in Nigeria, I don’t think anything can surprise us anymore. A lot has happened. The road to 2023 is very rough, filled with bumps. Sometimes I wonder where Nigeria is headed. The future of Nigeria looks bleak. It’s a battle between politicians who have declared ambition as the next president and their supporters.

The next election in Nigeria is coming up in less than a year. At this stage, we can all conclude that the road to 2023 is very rough and we have only just begun.

We need to grow beyond what we are facing. Nigeria needs to grow.

The recent security breech and attack at the Kuje prison in Abuja shows that we still have a long way to go and there is much work needed to be done. Previously we have also heard about various security threats such as kidnappings and robberies on the highway and even on the railway and it almost seems that no method of travelling is safe anymore. It has become a series of terrible events unfolding one after the other.

With concerns to the upcoming election, It is said that INEC recognizes only 18 parties and this was after quite a number of parties we deregistered in 2020. The major parties produced their presidential aspirants which are APC’s Bola Ahmed Tinubu, PDP’s Atiku Abubakar and Labour party’s Peter Obi among other parties and their candidates.

The APC Presidential candidate announced his running mate and these raised concerns and further confirmed opinions that had been previously voiced out about how likely it is for APC to come out with a Muslim-Muslim ticket. The major running parties selected running mates with different religions. It seems though that APC despite these opinions from different corners will continue to device ways in which they can pull through.

Despite all these, it also seems more Nigerians are fed up with the situation of the country and are taking a step in the right direction by not being politically apartheid. There is a tremendous increase in the number of people who have newly registered as voters. INEC announced on the 28 of June that there are over 10 million new voters registered. The voter’s registration had to be extended until further notice seeing the influx of new voters.

A lot has happened and the journey has been rough but it has only just begun, but we can only hope and wish for the best that could ever happen to our very own nation, Nigeria
