Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi has made a bold assertion about English Premier League referees
De Zerbi in a post-match interview following his side's 1-1 draw with Sheffield United expressed his disdain for referees in England.
The Seagulls raced into the lead against the Blades courtesy of a brilliant goal from Simon Adingra.
However, Mahmoud Dahoud was sent off for Roberto De Zerbi's side in the 69th minute for a stamp on substitute Ben Osborn.
5 minutes later, Adam Webster put the ball into his net, with Sheffield United securing a massive draw at the Amex Stadium.
Brighton are currently on a 6-game winless run, with Roberto De Zerbi also being booked for his touchline antics in the game played on Sunday, November 12, 2023.
Following the expiration of the encounter, De Zerbi took to a post-match presser to voice out his displeasure over English referees.
The Italian tactician said: “I am honest and clear... I don't like 80 percent of English referees.
“That isn't a new opinion. I don't like them. I don't like their behavior on the pitch.”
He added that England is the only country where there is uncertainty with the calls made by VAR.
He said: “England is the only country where when there is VAR, you are not sure that the decision is right.
“In other countries, you have to be sure 100 percent that the decision taken is right. In England, no, and I am not able to understand.”
Brighton sits 8th on the Premier League table with 19 points, 5 wins, 4 draws, and 3 defeats from 12 matches.
Roberto De Zerbi has handed the Seagulls their first taste of European football this campaign, having qualified the English side for the UEFA Europa League in his first season as manager of Brighton.
De Zerbi replaced Graham Potter in September 2022, with Potter moving to West London club, Chelsea.
The Seagulls had a remarkable 2022/23 season by their standards, finishing 6th in the Premier League log and qualifying for the 2023/24 UEFA Europa League.
Meanwhile, Brighton and Hove Albion made reinforcements in the summer transfer window, with notable players like Joao Pedro, James Milner, and Igor joining the club.
They are also placed 2nd in their UEFA Europa League group, with 7 points from 4 matches.
Roberto De Zerbi's side have won 2 games, drawn 1, and lost 1 in the tournament this campaign.
Brighton last picked up a victory in the English Premier League on September 24, 2023, defeating Bournemouth comprehensively by 3-1.
However, the Seagulls have found a haven in other cup competitions, as they headed into that game on Sunday, November 9, 2023, following a 0-2 victory over Dutch giants Ajax.
Unfortunately, they have experienced a shaky start to the Premier League season, leaving their fans worried due to the happenings.
