Lawyers of Róbson de Souza, popularly known as Robinho, expressed on Thursday, March 21, 2024, that they will file an appeal with the Supreme Court after their client was slammed with a nine-year prison sentence.
Robinho, who played for several big clubs including the likes of AC Milan and Real Madrid was ordered on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, to commence his jail term immediately in Brazil.
The 40-year-old was sentenced in an Italian court for participating in the 2013 gang rape of a woman at a Milan nightclub, during his spell with AC Milan.
On Thursday, March 21, 2024, Robinho's legal team requested that the foremost court postpone the sentencing decision, made by the highest appeal court in Brazil.
This is to offer the former Manchester City man time to contest the legality of his imprisonment.
Róbson de Souza was first convicted of rape by an Italian court in 2017, and he subsequently lost an appeal in 2020, before having his nine-year jail sentence upheld by Italy’s highest court in 2022.
Italian prosecutors slammed him with an international arrest warrant, however, as Brazil does not extradite its citizens, Italy requested that he serves the sentence in his home country.
On Wednesday, March 21, 2024, judges in a Brazilian court made a ruling with nine votes going in favor of Italy's request while two were against their request.
Based on the new ruling, it implied that Robinho was expected to commence his prison sentence “immediately”.
Meanwhile, Robinho has subsequently been arrested in Brazil to begin his nine-year prison sentence.
The former Brazil international was arrested at his flat in his home city of Santos, most to the delight of his accusers.
The move taken by Brazil's justice system has been praised by many in local media, who were initially frantic that the footballer would evade justice due to his fame and wealth.
On Sunday, March 17, 2024, Robinho claimed whilst speaking with a Brazilian network that the sex had been “consensual”.
Anyway, Róbson de Souza made 634 career appearances, scoring 189 goals and providing 91 assists in all competitions during his active days.
The skillful player also played a century of matches for Brazil, scoring 28 goals and providing 23 assists.
Robinho becomes the latest Brazilian in recent years to face a jail term, with Ronaldinho, Dani Alves, and Adriano being other notable examples.
Ronaldinho Gaucho was put in confinement in 2020 for a brief period with regard to charges of money laundering and using a counterfeit passport.
Adriano in 2014 was arrested for drug-trafficking offenses, although the charges were dropped.
Dani Alves is also serving a four-and-a-half-year sentence for sexually assaulting a woman in a Barcelona nightclub in 2022.
Alves has been freed on a €1 million bail, having been arrested in January 2023, but he spent more than a year in prison before he was convicted of rape.
