SEC TO TACKLE INVESTMENT FRAUD, PLANS TO LAUNCH CAPITAL MARKET RADIO

1. SEC's Warning Against Illegal Fund Management: The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has issued a stern warning to individuals and entities involved in illegal fund management schemes. The Commission emphasized that these activities must cease immediately or face serious legal consequences. This move is part of SEC's broader effort to ensure investor protection and maintain market integrity.

2. Establishment of Capital Market Radio: SEC has unveiled plans to launch a capital market radio station aimed at educating Nigerians, especially those in rural areas, about the capital market and investment opportunities. This initiative is designed to raise financial literacy across the country and encourage informed investment decisions.

3. Enforcement of Legal Mechanisms: SEC's Director General, Emomotimi Agama, announced that the Commission will intensify its enforcement actions in collaboration with the Nigerian Police and the Federal Ministry of Justice to clamp down on illegal investment activities. This is in line with Section 13(a) of the Investments and Securities Act 2007, which grants SEC the authority to regulate securities businesses in Nigeria.

4. World Investor Week 2024: Scheduled for October 7-14, the World Investor Week 2024, themed "Technology and Digital Finance, Crypto Assets and Sustainable Finance," will focus on investor education. Activities such as bell-ringing ceremonies, panel discussions, and investor clinics will be held to promote financial literacy and create awareness about investment opportunities in Nigeria.

5. Emphasis on Financial Education: Agama stressed the importance of educating investors about risk profiles and investment opportunities, especially with regard to identifying priority and risky investments. SEC aims to ensure that investors understand their financial goals and risk appetites, with resources available to help them make informed decisions.

6. Long-Term Education Initiatives: In addition to the capital market radio, SEC plans to incorporate capital market studies into tertiary institution curricula, ensuring that students gain foundational knowledge about wealth creation and economic development through investments.
