Students protest in FUTA over death of fellow student

Many Students of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, (FUTA) located in Ondo State have begun a massive protest over the death of their fellow student in the university. The students took to the highway to protest against the sudden death of their colleague/classmate.

A student of the University who has been identified as Ayomide Akeredolu passed away recently at the university’s health care facility. The student was a 500 level student at FUTA and the incident had occurred on Thursday.

Students decided to protest about the health care services being rendered at the University Health Center/facility.
Many road users were stranded on the highway as these students blocked the roads for their protest. The protest took place at the Akure-Llesa highway.

The male student who sadly passed away had reportedly slumped in his hostel. The friends of the young man rushed him immediately to the health centre and according to the students, this was around 8:30 p.m. that day, Thursday.

He passed away at the health care centre of the University that night. Some students had spoken to some journalists in Akure and they revealed that Ayomide died in the health center due to lack of adequate care.

They said that there had been no power supply at the time the victim was being attended to in the health facility. He said they had to use their phone flashlight to assist the doctors who attended to their colleague. The students then decided to resort to a protest saying work needed to be done in the health facility of the University.

The institution, FUTA has also shared a statement regarding the recent incident. The Director of Corporate Communication of the Institution, Adegbenro Adebanjo, was the one who released the statement.

The institution shared their condolences for the victim and family but revealed that the student they brought to the facility was already dead when he was brought in. They revealed that the student had truly slumped in his hostel but was brought to the hospital dead.
They said all attempts and medical intervention at resuscitation, even at the Health Centre had failed.

According to the institution “According to the doctor on duty, the student was rushed to the health center at about 8:50 p.m. on Thursday, August 24, 2023. He was brought in dead. Efforts to resuscitate him through cardiopulmonary resuscitation and oxygen therapy proved abortive. He was subsequently taken to the UNIMED Teaching Hospital, Akure, by the medical personnel on duty inside the university ambulance.”

“Understandably, his friends and colleagues are devastated by the sad development. May the Good Lord grant his soul eternal repose and give the family and friends the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss."

They then went ahead to clarify the news of the protest which the students embarked on saying "However, due to some perceived misgivings about services at the University Health Center, students embarked on a protest on Friday, August 25, 2023. It is important to point out that the protest was not directly related to the death of the student. The representatives of the students, at a meeting with management called at the behest of the Vice Chancellor, pointed out some lacunae in the process of accessing services at the Health Center. The management, in the course of the meeting, directed that immediate remedial measures be taken to address the lacuna and other issues raised by the students. The corrective measures will be reviewed from time to time to ensure that they are being implemented to the letter and to the satisfaction of the students"
