The Super Eagles have suffered a huge blow as star striker Taiwo Awoniyi was ruled out of action after sustaining an injury just before Nigeria's friendly games against Ghana and Mali.
The 26-year-old has been a pivotal part of the Nottingham Forest team since he joined the English club in the summer of 2023 from Union Berlin.
The Nigerian-born was expected to deliver the best after his eye-catching performance during his spell in Germany, unfortunately, he has failed to reach his potential and deliver the goods consistently.
The former Union Berlin forward has been disturbed by injuries throughout his stay at the club, keeping him out of 27 games. This season, Awoniyi had a slow start because of an injury crisis.
However, he sustained an injury in November 2023 and had to sit out almost three months. This ensured he did not make Nigeria’s squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
Since his return to action in late January 2024, Awoniyi has played nine games for Nottingham Forest. He was also called up for the Super Eagles’ friendly games against Ghana and Mali later this month.
Unfortunately, the former Liverpool player has suffered another setback just before Nottingham's recent Premier League against Luton Town on March 16.
The extent of the injury is unknown, but according to the report, Awoniyi will be out for a few weeks. This is expected to rule him out of action for Nigeria’s friendly games against Ghana and Mali later this month.
Speaking to reporters about the severity of Awoniyi's injury, Nottingham Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo said; "We need our strikers to finish and score".
"Unfortunately, we’ve had a big blow with the fitness of Taiwo Awoniyi—he had a knock during the week so let’s see how he is. We must keep him fit".
What's next for Taiwo Awoniyi?
The 23-year-old be in rehabilitation and will continue working on his recovery until he's fully fit for their upcoming games as the Eagles battle Mali and Ghana on March 22, both games will be played at the Grande de Marrakech, Morocco.
