WhatsApp introduces new restrictions on viral messages
April 27, 2020
Owners of the social media messaging app,
WhatsApp, have introduced new restrictions on the number of viral messages users can forward by 70%.
This means that highly forwarded messages can only be shared to not more than one person.
Speaking on the development on Monday, the messaging apps’s spokesperson said the caveat was launched much earlier in April to control the spread of misleading information about the coronavirus pandemic.
“WhatsApp is
committed to doing our part to tackle viral messages. We recently introduced a limit to sharing ‘highly forwarded messages’ to just one chat. Since putting into place this new limit globally, there has been a 70% reduction in the number of highly forwarded messages sent on WhatsApp. This change is helping keep WhatsApp a place for personal and private conversations”, the spokesperson said.
