TEENAGE MUM RELEASED ON BAIL FROM DELTA PRISON.
Miss Beauty Obi, an 18-year-old mother of a two-week-old infant who is a prisoner of Warri Custodial Centre, also known as Okere Prison, has been granted bail on compassionate grounds by Delta State Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Tessy Diai.
Following an appeal from the Deputy Controller of the Warri Custodial Centre, Mr. Edo Joseph Lucky who is the Chief Judge was lenient to her because she had reportedly given birth to her baby two weeks ago and this was through caesarean section (CS)
Mr. Lucky had passionately described the plight of the adolescent mother and her boyfriend, who had been committed to the Custodial Centre while she was pregnant.
'When young Miss Beauty was due for delivery, she was taken to the Warri Central Hospital, where she gave birth via caesarean section, but the child was placed in an incubator for one week before being reunited with the mother in custody,' according to the Deputy Controller of the Custodial Centre.
Mr. Lucky further revealed that the prison authority spent N1,000 per hour for the one week the child was in the incubator, which he said prompted him to appeal to the Chief Judge to grant her bail so she could go to her parents for proper treatment.
The Chief Judge, who ardently assisted Beauty Obi with N20,000, granted her bail in the sum of N250,000 with one surety in the same amount.
The 18-year-old mother, who is from Obingwa in Imo State, while expressing her gratitude to the Chief Judge for the financial assistance, described how she and her boyfriend were arrested at a location where he was attempting to sell a stolen phone.
The young mother, whose mother is from Kwale in Ndokwa West Local Government Area of Delta State, said she had no idea how her man obtained the phone and maintained that she was innocent of the armed robbery accusation leveled against her.
The Chief Judge also dismissed five detainees from the 539 warrants reviewed, adding that those released were based on the recommendation of the Director of Public Prosecutions, who determined that those people had no case to answer.
Lofore Difference, 37, Innocent Okpaghe, 37, Umukoro Kingsley, 51, and Chenago Wisdom, 29, were among those charged with crimes ranging from armed robbery to kidnapping and murder.
