Godwin Emefiele
Godwin Emefiele is a Nigerian banker and politician who served as the Governor of the apex bank in Nigeria. He served as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria from the 4th of June 2014 till 2023 before he got suspended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in June. Emefiele was born on the 4th of August 1961. He has two children and is currently married to Mrs Margaret Emefiele. He is a proud alumnus of four schools namely the University of Nigeria, Stanford University, Harvard University, and Wharton School of Business.
Emefiele was born in Lagos State but his parents are natives of Agbor, an area in Delta State. Long before he became the Governor of CBN, Emefiele taught Finance at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He had worked as a banker for 18 years to gain experience in the banking sector. He once worked as the CEO of Zenith Bank plc. He also served as the executive director who oversaw strategic planning, treasury, and financial control of the Zenith Bank.

Immediately Emefiele was suspended on the 9th of June 2023, he was taken into the custody of the Department of Social Services (DSS) to prevent him from fleeing the country. A few weeks later, the DSS freed him, and instead of regaining his freedom, he was immediately arrested by the officials of the EFCC on account of embezzlement and misappropriation of funds. He will be detained in their custody until he gets cleared of the allegations levied against him.
In addition to this current woes, Emefiele has a court case that he hasn't attended to. He has been mandated to appear in court over a $53 million debt owed to one Paris Club. The judge in charge of the case Justice Ekwo has requested for his presence but the EFCC wouldn't release him for reasons best known to them. Now, Justice Ekwo has given him a final notice to appear before the court on or before January 25, 2024. This was after CBN counsel, Audu Anuga pleaded for leniency over the absence of Emefiele due to his detention at the EFCC.
