The Senate President of Nigeria, Godswill Akpabio has stated that the country is experiencing insecurity and terrorism because of the old National Anthem, "Arise O Compatriots".

The Senate President mentioned this while giving a speech at the Nigerian Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies in Abuja. Godswill Akpabio emphasized that if Nigeria had not changed the national Anthem from "Nigeria we hail thee" to "Arise O Compatriots", it would have tackled issues like insecurity and terrorism.

Akpabio encouraged Nigerians to study the nation's history correctly before criticizing the government for changing the recent national Anthem to the old colonial Anthem. He stressed that before the Anthem was created, a panel was set up in 1959 to receive input from Nigerians. Therefore, "Nigeria we hail thee" may not be a colonial Anthem after all.
