Thomas Tuchel is reportedly set to leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season, following a disastrous campaign in the German club.
The Bundesliga powerhouse confirmed their decision to part ways with the former Chelsea manager on Wednesday, February 21.
What happened?
Thomas Tuchel has been under intense pressure since the beginning of this season prompting uncertainty around his future at Bayern.
However, after a serious discussion between the two parties, the club and the manager reached an agreement to go their separate ways in the summer.
The Bundesliga giant will now be on the lookout for a potential replacement of the former Paris Saint Germain head coach.
According to a statement released by club CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen on Wednesday, he confirmed that Tuchel will be stepping down from his position at the end of the season.
He said; "In an open, good conversation decided to mutually end our collaboration in the summer. Our goal is to carry out a sporting realignment with a new coach for the 2024/25 season".
"Until then, every individual in the club is expressly challenged to achieve the maximum possible in the Champions League and the Bundesliga".
He added; "I also explicitly hold the team responsible. Especially in the Champions League, we are convinced that after the 0-1 defeat in the first leg at Lazio, Rome, we will advance to the quarter-finals in the second leg in our fully occupied Allianz Arena with our fans behind us".
Tuchel, on the other hand, added on the decision; "We have agreed that we will end our collaboration after this season. Until then, I and my coaching team will of course continue to do everything we can to ensure maximum success".
Tuchel was appointed as Julian Nagelsmann's replacement at Bayern back in March 2023 and steered the club to an 11th consecutive Bundesliga title in his first couple of months in charge.
However, the German tactician has struggled to find an adequate balance in the team, and results have taken a turn for the worse this campaign, with Bayern falling eight points behind league leader Bayer Leverkusen in the table after 22 games.
Bayern also crashed out of the DFB-Pokal in the second round stage and faced a tough battle to reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League after losing the first leg of their round of 16 clash against Lazio.
That result was frustrated by damaging Bundesliga setbacks against Leverkusen and Bochum, and the board has decided a change will be necessary in the summer, with Tuchel's contract set to be ripped up one year early.
Bayern have relied heavily on the scoring output of summer signing Harry Kane this season, with the former Tottenham striker already bagged 29 goals for the club in just 30 appearances.
Meanwhile, Bayern have been lacking quality across the pitch and no longer looks like one of Europe's elite clubs.
Tuchel will still have the opportunity to leave on a high note, though, with a set of must-win Bundesliga matches against RB Leipzig and Freiburg up next before Bayern will hope to complete a second comeback in the Champions League against Lazio at Allianz Arena on March 5.
What's next for Bayern Munich?
It remains to be seen which manager the club will announce next as several names including Xabi Alonso and Jurgen Klopp have been linked with a move to the club.
