On Sunday morning, gunmen attacked St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, the headquarters of Ondo State's Owo Local Government Area, killing nearly 50 members of the congregation during a church service.

It was said that no fewer than 50 dead were removed from the church, with numerous casualties being treated at the Federal Medical Center in Owo.

According to a source, some gunmen stormed the church during service and opened fire on the congregation, killing no less than 50 people.

He added that the assembly was caught off guard and that the casualty count could be higher because some worshippers who were carried to the hospital gave up.

He also stated that the attackers utilized explosives within the church compound, but that the majority of the people were hit with bullets. The attackers were claimed to have fled the site shortly after carrying out the slaughter, killing a large number of victims. In the church, some dead bodies were discovered drenched in blood.

According to an Owo nurse who spoke to newsmen on the condition of anonymity, there are not enough medical personnel on the ground and on duty to respond to the injuries at the hospital's emergency unit, and some of the casualties have been transferred to private hospitals.
