Seven people have been reported deceased in a road traffic accident in Agbede, Edo's Etsako West Local Government Area.

Miss Omozie Inegbenebor, an Assistant Route Commander and Public Education Officer for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Edo sector command, made the declaration in Benin on Monday.

The accident, which happened around 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, involved 14 vehicles, including 13 trucks and one Sienna bus, according to Inegbenebor.

She also stated that there were 25 adults involved in the incident, which claimed the lives of seven people and left other victims with varying degrees of injuries.

The FRSC Edo Sector Command was notified of a crash in Agbede, some 20 kilometers from the FRSC facility in Agbede, on Sunday, June 5, 2022.

She stated that the accident occurred as a result of one of the trucks' brake failure, which caused it to collide with other vehicles, resulting in many collisions and fires.

The FRSC Edo command's rescue squad has been on the ground conducting rescue operations, clearing blockages, and directing traffic in the region.

While conducting an on-the-spot assessment of the fatal crash, Sector Commander Mr. Henry Benamaisia expressed his condolences to the families of the victims who were present at the scene and ensured the proper transloading of the vehicles spilling fuel and the arrival of water tankers to put out the remaining fire.

Motorists should constantly make sure their brakes, tyres, and wipers are in good operating order, according to the sector commander.

He also recommended the general public use defensive driving skills at all times and to avoid exceeding the posted speed limit, she added.
