2 students recently passed away in a tragic accident in Akwa Ibom. The victims are students of the Akwa Ibom Polytechnic. It was a truck that crushed these 2 female students to death. This incident occured on Monday, January 9 2024. The accident happened a few metres away from the school premises. This was close to the junction of Ikot Inyang village on Aba Road in Ikot Ekpene local government area of Akwa Ibom. The vehicle had lost control and hit these 2 ladies.
It was the driver of the truck who had lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the girls. These girls died on the spot. Both ladies have been identified and their names are Abasifreke Okon, and Irene Edwin. They are from the Ikot Abasi and Ibesikpo Asutan local government area. They had been preparing for their examinations which was set to hold on Wednesday, the 10th of January 2024. Both students were ND 2 Science Laboratory Technology students

The classmates of these ladies described them as best friends. They were always together. They were together together the accident occurred. After the incident, the management of the Polytechnic had to postpone the examinations. The Akwa Ibom State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Matthew Olonisaye, has also confirmed the incident. According to him, the truck driver had been driving recklessly when he lost control of the vehicle. He has sympathised with the families of the victims.
In his words “It actually happened; it’s because of loss of control by the driver. We advise drivers to abide with the rules that guide the usage of the road, they should not be in a hurry. Drivers should also make vehicle maintenance a priority for any life lost cannot come back. An accident does not just happen; it is caused. I commiserate with the families of those who lost their lives,”
