Two teenagers have been apprehended for alleged misogynistic chanting towards Welsh referee Rebecca Welch.

The incident occurred during Birmingham City's Championship encounter against Sheffield Wednesday on November 25, 2023.

The game which went down at St Andrew's ended 2-1, with manager Wayne Rooney picking up his first win in some style.

George Byers put Sheffield Wednesday ahead in the 45th minute before Juninho Bacuna equalized 3 minutes later.

9 minutes before the expiration of regulation time, Jordan James scored the game's defining goal, handing Birmingham City the victory for the first time in 6 matches.

Police in the West Midlands said that two teenagers, aged 17, have been detained for a public order offense.

Welch also faced sexist chanting during a game involving Birmingham City and Preston North End played on Saturday, January 21, 2023.

The match also ended 2-1, but the home team, Birmingham City, lost to their Championship opposition.

In a police statement released following the recent incident, an excerpt from it reads: “We don't tolerate any form of hate and it is important that hate crime is reported to us.”

Rebecca Welch became the first woman to handle a Championship game when she officiated Birmingham City's clash with Preston North End in January 2023.

Following the incident which occurred on January 21, 2023, Wayne Rooney's side had to release a statement warning fans against a repeat of such during the Sheffield United match as it “would not be tolerated”.

Birmingham City also made it clear that anyone found culpable of such illicit acts could be slammed with a ban of nearly 5 years.

Meanwhile, the Blues sit 14th on the Championship table with 22 points, following their 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday.

Wayne Rooney has finally picked up his first win as manager of Birmingham City, and it had to come in some style.

Rooney was appointed as manager of the Championship club on October 11, 2023, and he struggled during his first few matches with the club.

Before the victory over Sheffield Wednesday, Birmingham City lost 4 games and drew 1 in the Championship.

However, they will be hoping that the recent victory can galvanize them towards more wins and possibly a promotion berth to the Premier League.

Wayne Rooney's side are only 6 points away from the 6th position on the Championship table, the last promotion qualification spot.

If they are seeking automatic qualification to the top-flight, they would have to be on an imperious run, to ascend to 2nd on the log.

They are 19 points away from Ipswich, who currently occupy the 2nd spot on the log, and a whopping 20 points away from 1st placed Leicester City.

Birmingham City visit Edwood Park next, to play against 10th-placed Blackburn Rovers, in a Matchday 18 Championship action.
