Update: corpses of children trapped under rubble found
The corpses of the 2 children who were trapped under the rubble of a building collapse have been found.
These children were trapped beneath a rubble when the fence of another building, a hotel collapsed on the rooms these children were staying in.
This incident happened yesterday. It was as a result of the heavy rain which fell for hours, from morning till afternoon. This happened at Ishawo, Ikorodu area of Lagos State.
The little children have been identified as siblings. The first has been identified as Yinka who is 9 years old and the second is Gbolahan who is 7 years old
The first responders who happened to be residents of the area tried to save these boys' lives. They had begun digging the rubble to find these children but sadly could only recover their corpses as the both of them passed away.
Some witness and residents of the area have been thrown into mourning as the residents begun removing the dead bodies of these little boys.
It was the men of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service who removed the bodies.
The residents have commenced the rescue operation yesterday while waiting on the LASEMA and fire service to come to their aid after making a distress call.
The parents of these children have still not been able to be reached. The cause of this fence collapse has still not been determined.
It was Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu who is the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, who confirmed the death of these children.
He revealed that when the LASEMA officers arrive at the scene, they saw the fence of a single-storey hotel building had collapsed on a 3 bedroom bungalow which was behind the hotel.
They have conducted further investigation and discovered that it was the poor drainage that weakened the fence of the hostel and led to its collapse.
He also revealed that the little boys have since been buried according to Muslim rites.
The building has been shut down by the agency to avoid further happenings. They have also handed it over to the Lagos State Building Control Agency, (LABCA)
