Update: Court grants Godwin Emefiele bail once again
The court has once again granted Godwin Emefiele bail. Godwin Emefiele is the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). He began serving as the Governor of CBN on the 4th of June, 2014 until June 2023 when president Bola Tinubu suspended him. Godwin Emefiele is a 62 year old Banker and politician. He is married to Margaret Emefiele.
It was a recent High Court sitting in Abuja that concluded and granted Godwin Emefiele bail in the sum of N300 million. The judgement was delivered by Justice Hamza Muazu of the FCT High Court. This happened today, Wednesday November 22, 2023. Recall just a few days ago, he was remanded to the Kuje prison pending the time his bail request is determined.
It was also a High Court sitting in Abuja that sentenced Emefiele to Kuje Prison. Emefiele is currently facing trial on the grounds of fraud. It was his counsel who moved for the bail application and the judge asked for time to deliver the ruling for his bail. He has now been granted a N300m bail. In addition to the bail, he is also required to provide two sureties. These are part of his bail conditions which must be fulfilled. These two sureties must have certificates of occupancy and titles of properties all within the Maitama District in Abuja.
The court also ordered Emefiele to submit all his travel documents to the court registrar. He is required to stay within the Abuja Municipal Council. Until all his bail conditions are full met, Emefiele is expected to still stay in Kuje Prison.
